Quote by Father John Romanides Holy Scripture vs. Revelation
As Fr. John Romanides has stated:
"Is there a single Church Father who identifies Holy Scripture with the experience of theosis itself? No, there is not one, because God's revelation to mankind is the experience of theosis. In fact, since revelation is the experience of theosis, an experience that transcends all expressions and concepts, the identification of Holy Scripture with revelation is, in terms of dogmatic theology, pure heresy

Please elaborate further what is meant by the following statement: "since revelation is the experience of theosis, an experience that transcends all expressions and concepts, the identification of Holy Scripture with revelation is, in terms of dogmatic theology, pure heresy". How can scripture not be classified under revelation? Isn't the Book of Revelation an example of revelation from scripture?
ReplyDeleteGreetings, Joe... yes, but revelation is the experience of God directly without words, written verse. Not by scholastic study or academic and rational speculation. Not exclusively by reading a book. It is a direct experience via the nous, the noetic heart, and not solely via discursive reasoning; it is beyond and above. Our reasoning is the first step. We read and take it in via the two testaments. Then, God-willing, comes illumination... rising above reason, above letters/words, then the next step comes Theosis. This transcends all and is the ongoing process of the spiritual life rising above dialect and finite things.

In our day and age we have confused the spiritual life with conservativism or liberalism, Christianity is neither, it far transcends right and left political factions. Christianity is not a social hall for Jesus, book club nor a feel-good society... it is a tranformation from a "sick patient" to a healed human nature. The Church is a hospital: It's tools are sacraments; it's medicine is Eucharist and it's surgical instruments are Confession, Marriage, Holy Unction, etc.
God bless you
